TC TO JAMES SPEDDING
Chelsea, 13th July [1838]—
Dear Spedding,
I am afraid I cannot join your carnivorous party at the Piazzas,1—being far gone in dyspepsia, insomnolence, and Werterism itself, during this frightful weather! I will do what I can to come in for some share of the punch and speech; tho' of this too I ought to make no promise. May the owl of Minerva be among you!
Cannot you call it the “Anonymous Club”? The Convention? The Academical Palaver? The &c &c?2
Believe me ever, / faithfully Yours /
T. Carlyle
