TC TO RALPH WALDO EMERSON
Chelsea, London 5 Feby / 1840—
Dear Emerson,
Mr Alexander Hume1 a respectable Scottish man, an acquaintance of mine, is about visiting New York; partly, I think, for the benefit of the sail in a medicinal point of view. He has plenty of introductions to Commercial people; but would like to see some Literary person or persons, being himself withal a lover of Literature and worker therein.
I give him this Note, in case of need, to be forwarded to you with his New York address; that you may do therein what your goodness and insight shall direct.
Your ever truly /
T. Carlyle
