TC TO AN UNIDENTIFIED CORRESPONDENT
Chelsea, Friday Evg [1 May? 1840]
My dear Sir,
How happy should I be to attend you, were my nerves like those of other men! But I am dyspeptic, bilious,—a dinner after six at night ruins me for ten days; and there are three fatal weeks of lecturing ahead of me. With far more reluctance than you will readily give me credit for, I have to admit that the clear precept of Reason is: Deny thyself, and stay at home!
I pray you to pity me, and bring my good friends to do the like;—yet with hope, were the Lectures and East winds over!
I remain always / very truly yours
T. Carlyle
