My dear Sir,
It would give Mrs Carlyle and me much pleasure to attend you, as you kindly request: but unfortunately we must not. Influenza, the remains of Influenza and this miserable North East weather confines us strictly within doors after sunset.
I remember well and with pleasure the meeting we had at Dr Beattie's.1 In spite of Influenzas and hindrances, I still hope it will not be the last one. Believe me
