JWC TO JOHN FORSTER
[October 1841]
I promised to bring you a new little God from Scotland did I not?1 Oh—one promises so much that one never performs! But see! I have at least made an approximation towards performance; for I have made you two pedestals for boiling water jugs, which are perhaps after all, with the companionship of a bottle of brandy as wholesome objects of idolworship as a man may indulge in at this age of the world
You will be sure to come on Monday at half after four— I am down at zero and need to see anything like you that has some sunshine to ray out on me—
Did Mrs Macready see my name in pencil on Darwin's card a fortnight ago?
God keep you well and wise! what more can one wish
truly yours /
Jane W Carlyle
