Chelsea, Tuesday 21 Decr, 1841—
My dear Mother,
I wrote to you at Dumfries a Letter1 which would arrive there on Saturday night. The Doctor, since that, has informed me that he had a Letter from James Aitken, signifying that you had been sent for to Scotsbrig; that poor little Tom had again fallen worse, that his poor little life was still in great danger!— We can send only our affectionate sympathies; and wait with anxiety what news shall be brought us.
My Review Article was sent me yesterday; four copies of it. I send you one, another goes to Jean, Jack has bespoken a third, and one I am to keep. You will be able to make but little of it, and indeed it is worth little either to you or to anybody: nevertheless I know you will like to have it; so here it is.——— I have not yet got any other right writing begun; I shall have terrible boring and digging first. I must just bore away!
Jean I suppose would forward you the Letter I wrote; perhaps you will get it the day before this.— I am thinking to write to Alick soon. We anxiously wait for news. Ever your affectionate
