TC TO EDWIN CHADWICK
Templand, Thornhill, Dum-/-fries, 23 March, 1842—
My dear Sir,
Your Poor-Law report1 has not yet reached me, nor has the Letter till this morning; owing to a very sad event, the unexpected Death of my Mother-in-Law, which suddenly called me hither, and will detain me here for another two weeks yet. My “annotations,” I fear, which I should have cheerfully offered, and which I thank you much for giving me the opportunity of offering, will come now too late.
With kind regards to Mrs Chadwick,2
Yours very truly /
T. Carlyle
