1. Aeneas' pilot in Vergil's Aeneid. Spring Rice was a commissioner of customs; they were to go to Margate by steamer, and to Ostend by the revenue cutter Vigilant accompanied by his younger brother Thomas Charles William Spring Rice (1819–70), 2d son of Lord Monteagle. They travelled by rail to Bruges and Ghent, and returned to London by 10 Aug. As always, TC was stimulated by travel. He wrote an account, quoted by Froude 3:259–72 and pbd. A. Carlyle, “Notes of a Three-Days' Tour to the Netherlands. August, 1842,” Cornhill Magazine 53 (1922):493–512, 626–40. The MS of 25 pp. is in the British Library. After being read by JWC and the Bullers it was mislaid for many years; found and read by TC, 9 Aug. 1866, who noted “Was in Her Box.”
