The addressee and date are identified by reference to JWC to JF, [ca. 10 Nov.]; also dated by the Carlyles' mention of bad weather in other letters of early Nov. Further, Forster went to Cornwall with Dickens and others for eight or nine days beginning 27 Oct. (see DL 3:356n, 358n), and so was not near. [To maintain the order established by the editors of the CL, this letter has been assigned a document date of 31 Oct. 1842.]
