Gentlemen:

I request and hereby authorize you, to give on my behalf to the Honourable the Commissioners of Her Majestys Customs, such notice as you may deem necessary to prevent the importation of Foreign editions of the following publications, that is to say—

The French Revolution, a History
Sartor Resartus; the Life and opinions of Herr Teufelsdrockh
Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Travels
On Heroes, Hero Worship and the Heroic in History
Chartism
Critical and Miscellaneous Essays
Life of Frederick Schiller, comprehending an examination of his Works

TC-C&H [CAH], [late] March. MS: Huntington Lib.; only the signature is in TC's hand. Hitherto unpbd. The copyright act, 1 July 1842, section 17, decreed that only the proprietor of the copyright or someone authorized by him could import for sale or hire into the U.K. or any part of the British dominions any book first composed in the U.K., as a protection against the import of pirated copies of British works. This letter was presumably TC's authorization to Chapman & Hall as his new publishers. [To maintain the order established by the editors of the CL, this letter has been assigned a document date of 31 March 1843.]
