TC TO HENRY ALWORTH MEREWETHER

5. Cheyne Row, Chelsea 4 May, 1844—

Sir,

May I beg of you to return, in some fit way, my very grateful acknowledgements to the Gentlemen of the Common Council and of the Library Subcommittee for the handsome and liberal permission they have given me, in reference to the City records and my historical inquiries connected therewith.1

Of this valuable permission I hope to make due use by and by; and in the meanwhile there remains with me, and must remain, an altogether pleasant sense of the courtesy with which I have been treated by these Gentlemen, by yourself and by all parties, in this business.

With many thanks and acknowledgements

I am / Sir / Your most obedt & obliged / Thomas Carlyle
