1. The battle, 14 June 1645; see TC to EF, 18 Sept. 1842.

2. TC apparently sent FitzGerald a draft account of the battle; see Cromwell, Works 6:211–13. For FitzGerald's original explorations, see Terhune, LEF 1:325–60, and his diagrams and sketches, LEF 1:353 and between 402–3. Referring to this draft, FitzGerald wrote to a friend, [14 May], that TC “has entirely misstated all about Naseby, after all my trouble” (Terhune, LEF 1:489).

3. The duke of Manchester, who delivered the papers personally at Cheyne Row. TC printed the Cromwell letter to Maj. Gen. Crawford, 10 March 1643, from the copy Crawford made for use by the 2d earl of Manchester when attacking Cromwell on a later occasion; adjoined to the copy was a “confused loud-spoken recriminatory Narrative” about the second battle of Naseby (Works 6:181–83). TC wrote a three-page document on “Cromwell Papers at Kimbolton,” adding: “These Papers are curious. In memory of my gratitude for a sight of them may these Transcripts find a place at their side.— T.C.
