Thomas Reseigh, a London solicitor's confidential clerk and friend of Thomas Hood, whose pension of £100 p.a., awarded 1844, was to be paid to his wife, Jane, at his request. Reseigh, Milnes, et al. formed a committee to raise a subscription for her and the two children. A notice in the Athenaeum, 17 May, named the committee of thirteen prominent men, but not including TC. One in the Times, 15 July, added Dickens and TC and announced that £1,033 had been raised. This was later increased to over £1,386, and it was proposed that a monument costing not more than £50 be erected over Hood's grave, Kensal Green cemetery; this was completed in 1854.
