TC-JWC, [22 July]. MS: Yale. Hitherto unpbd. The note is written on the back of a letter, dated 21 July, from William Charles Macready (1793–1873; DNB), actor-manager, whom the Carlyles had known since 1839. Evidently written on TC's return home after seeing JWC off for Liverpool at Euston Station, Tues., 22 July. Macready had written: “Many, many thanks, my dear Sir, for your most acceptable present. I am grateful for the least improvement
of my acquaintance with Schiller.” In his diary he noted, 24 July: “Read … Carlyle's Life of Schiller—some contrast both in the character of the biographer and of the subject of his description to these elegant specimens of
man-made aristocracy. Delighted with the book—excited by the author and deeply interested in the character and fate of Schiller”
(Diaries 2:299).
