TC TO JANE WELSH CARLYLE
Chelsea, Tuesday 3 Augt 1845—
Dearest,—I know not what I shall do! I had just got, about 3½ o'clock, the above “Chelsea” written, when, rat-tat, came Darwin, and was admitted; he has sat ever since, sat thro' my dinner, and it is now half past 4 and more!—— Confound it!——
Well it cannot be helped. Know that all is well; that I will try to write in better time tomorrow; that I rejoice in thy sleep, in thy welfare, dear Goody; and so Adieu! I will try to get this off still by the bribe of a penny.—— Evermore T. C.
