Chelsea, 28 Augt, 1845—

Dear Miss Baring,

I am told they have given you an unbeautiful Nickname, the authorship of which they have the cruelty to impute to me! From my heart I disown the calcumnious imputation. I even mean to constitute you a Reader of my Books; thereby to shew that I entertain far other thoughts of you. Here is a volume which no “Spooney” ever read, or can read!1 Pray accept it from me, and make it yours in all ways, and let the loose tongues of mankind babble at their pleasure!—

In all seriousness, I am and remain, / Dear Miss Baring

Yours very sincerely

T. Carlyle
