TC-C&H [CAH], 7 Jan. MS: offered for sale by the Carnegie Book Shop, New York City, catalogue 249 (1960–61), item 30. 3 pp. Described as a “very long and important letter to the publisher of ‘Cromwell's Letters’ dealing entirely
with the manner in which the third volume of additional letters is to be brought out”; however, it clearly refers to the Supplement to the First Edition (Tarr 117–18), pbd. in June, as explained in TC's Pref. to the second edn., Works 6:v—vii. So many letters had been added in the second edn. that it was seen to be only fair to those who had bought the first
edn. that they should have them in this form. Also on 7 Jan. TC signed a receipt for Chapman & Hall written in another hand: “London Jany 7th 1846 / Received of Messrs Edward Chapman and William Hall the sum of Three Hundred Pounds, being the consideration for a first edition of my work entitled
‘Letters and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell,’ of which 1250 copies are printed. / T. Carlyle” (MS: Pierpont Morgan Lib.). Details
of TC's payments are not clear. Espinasse 74–75 says, “According to report, he received £1000 for this first edition,” yet
adds that the publisher's first accounting gave TC nothing since expenses exactly balanced receipts from sales.
