TC TO JOHN FORSTER
Chelsea, Friday [23 July 1847]
Dear Forster,—Perhaps there is some hope in this officially cautious Note of Tufnel's:1 thanks to you for the sight of it. Christie, by great effort it would seem, rescued his Documents from the hands of Morpeth; and got them safely lodged with the new Minister of Destiny,—to whom Helps also wrote a Letter for him.2 Poor creature, I do pray the gods he might get this poor lodgement for himself, and so let us have done with him!
We are off into Surrey for a week;3 cannot see your Soho-square Thalia4 tonight! About the end of next week we return; then, soon after, northward, or Lord knows whither. If possible you shall hear of us and see us again before we go.
Yours ever truly /
T. Carlyle
