Dear Brother,
This morning came the Letter from Alick which I now enclose: you will of course send it on to our Mother without any delay. There was in it a small good Note for “Mrs Carlyle Scotsbrig,” from Alick's little Jane:1 this latter I have forwarded today, with intimation that the other will follow from you tomorrow. I also send your Weekly Times today.— Alick, as you will find, has not bought the land; and seems inclined to send the money home again. It partly strikes me, at first sight, that this is not altogether worth while; but I have not yet considered; and in any case, if you have a clear thought about the affair, I will follow that.
Take care of all Thames Steamers!2 We are quite solitary here (Forster having been called off to Lancashire till tomorrow); and enjoy a “divine silence,”—and a good horse too!
