The letter, in fact, was possibly written by John Carlyle, as in his letter to TC, 14 Sept. he says that he called on JWC on Sun., 12 Sept., and that he “had a brief correspondence with Miss Martineau (see infra), & introduced her to [Christian Karl Josias] Bunsen [(1791–1860; see 11:29), Prussian ambassador to Britain] from whom she wanted some information about Egypt.’.

1. Harriet Martineau (1802–76; DNB), writer and friend of the Carlyles since 1836; see 6:305, 13:42, and other earlier vols. She had returned from the Middle East in June, and went home to Ambleside in Oct. John Carlyle also added: “She is going to write some work for [Charles] Knight [(1791–1873; DNB), publisher] with whom she is at present staying. I suppose her head to be in a very giddy state.” The work was The History of England During the Thirty Years' Peace, 1816–46, 2 vols. (1849–50), which Knight had begun.
