TC TO JANE WELSH CARLYLE
Scotsbrig, Monday— [13 September 1847]
If you got the Manchester Letter just now despatched, burn this; but if it proved too late for your hour of starting, then know that it is on the road (the merest sleepy dud, when it does come); and let this in the meanwhile say audibly:
Welcome, welcome, best Goody, to thy own poor home again! Sleep there, and having slept send me a little word as soon as possible.—
Mother and the rest of them all send you their love; in reality as well as word, I do believe.— Your affectionate
T. Carlyle
