TC TO LADY HARRIET BARING

As Hayward, in its best shape is part of a big ugly volume which you cannot carry about with you, I retain it till Tuesday, when the others are to be decided on; and only burden Cook at present with these two. Alfred Tennyson very gorgeous, fervid, luxuriant, but indolent, somnolent, almost imbecil;1 H. Taylor's Prose (if you have not seen it), clear, true, but dreadfully solemn, cold, and one must say, dull as the Lake of Haarlem!2— Tomorrow some decision! Take care of yourself in this dreadful weather; a grey dampish wind is howling from the North enough to kill us all.

Salva sit Regina [Hail to the Queen].
