Written at the top of the MS: “This note was written to my brother James Waylen, who afterwards lived near Carlyle and became very intimate with him, & greatly helped him in his literary researches.— C. Teberg.” James Waylen (1810–94), Wiltshire historian, author of Chronicles of the Devizes (1839), The Highwaymen of Wiltshire (1845), A History of Marlborough (1854), and other works, including The House of Cromwell and the Story of Dunkirk (1880), which was dedicated to TC, “whose elucidations … have elevated our admiration of the Protector into love.”.

2. A note at the top of the MS in another hand reads: “In reply respecting a journal of Waller's which contains notices of Cromwell's early campaigning.” TC gives a note from Cromwell to the poet Edmund Waller (1606–87) in Works 9:285–86.
