Approximately dated by Emerson's letter to Alexander Ireland, 13 April, saying: “Some friends are taking steps here to find me an audience in London” (Rusk 4:52). Espinasse mentions the letter, saying that Emerson was “very reluctant to lecture” there. It appears that it may have originated with Forster and possibly was never sent. Emerson gave a course of six lectures at the Literary and Scientific Inst., 17 Edwards St., Portman Sq., 6–17 June.

1. There is no record of Emerson's having met Edward Bulwer Lytton. He had met Forster, mid-March, at dinner at the home of B. W. Procter, with whom he had corresponded earlier (Rusk 4:41, 3:418).
