Chelsea, 17 April, 1849—

Dear Emerson,

This is brought to you by Mr Humphrey Mildmay, a Nephew of Lord Ashburton's, a descendant and synonym of august old Puritan Regicides,1—and in fine a very amiable, ingenuous and ingenious young Gentleman;—who, in the interval between the University and Active Life, has come across, with your friend Mr Bates,2 to look at America for a month or two. Pray give him welcome; encourage him in this good work; that others like him, more and more numerously, may run across and get acquainted with their big Cousins beyond seas,—which will be a useful process, I believe, both for the Cousins and them.— We are deep in the study of Indian meal here; and full of thoughts about you.
