Chelsea, 12 May, 1849—

My dear Sir,

Thanks for your pretty little Bill,1 which I have sent off to the proper hand.— If I find anything more among my Papers, soon or at any time, certainly I will think of Fraser in the first place of all.

Who is that youth that does the slaughtering of the Poetasters in this No?2 I consider him to possess some healthy faculty, and good aims; his faith in verse altogether, I expect, will gradually quit him (for the present and one or two more generations), and then perhaps he will give us something still more effectual.

M'Call's De Maistre was very well;3 sincere penetrating, tho' harsh: you might do something useful with M'C. by a little faith, hope, charity and prudence, four excellent virtues!
