Chelsea, 28 Novr, 1850—

Dear Sir,

If you know Mr Glyde junr,1 or take any interest in the Ipswich Mechanics Institute, as seems possible to me,—you may perhaps hear of a certain Mr Maccall, a highly deserving friend of mine, whom, it appears, Mr G is now in treaty with about a Course of Lectures in your Town. If so, pray help in this matter as you can. I have addressed to Mr G. a kind of Testimony on the subject,—which (if occasion arise) he will of course readily consent to shew you: that expresses my real opinion of the Gentleman in question; and will suggest to you what farther, if anything you can do in consequence

In haste, / Yours always truly

T. Carlyle
