1. John Hunter (1728–93), b. in Scotland, a noted surgeon, anatomist, and physiologist. He collected, at 28 Leicester Sq., a museum of anatomical, physiological, and pathological specimens, and appointed as his asst. conservator William Clift (1775–1849), whose da. Caroline was m., 1835, to Owen. Owen became the curator, 1842, and had been Hunterian prof. at the Royal Coll. of Surgeons since 1836. The biography was either Drewry Ottley, The Life of John Hunter (1835), or Sir William Jardine, Memoir of John Hunter, vol. 10 of The Naturalist's Library, ed. Sir W. Jardine, 40 vols. (1843).
