TC TO JOHN ESPIN
5. Cheyne Row, Chelsea / 11 feby 1851—
Mr Perry, House-Agent, Carpenter &c, of Danvers Street, Chelsea,1 is the only person I have ever transacted or communicated with about this House: from him, if you apply (for he has a Copy of the Lease &c &c), all manner of particulars in regard to my tenantcy2 here, may doubtless be obtained.
Your information hitherto seems correct;—with the addition that the Lease is from year to year,—half a year's warning, on either side, to be given (I think) in june or december: rent payable quarterly. The last quarter's rent was paid to Mr Perry, in decr last when it fell due.
If a proper title (which I suppose is not the case) could be given for this house, I have sometimes had a wish that I could purchase it on reasonable terms.
In haste I remain / Sir / Your obedt servt / T. Carlyle
John Espin Esq
