TC-TW [TWO], [21 Feb.]. MS: Baker Lib., Dartmouth Coll. Hitherto unpbd. On the back of the letter TC wrote: “For Mr Woolner / (to be forwarded immediately).” Thomas Woolner, sculptor. Dated by TC to JCA, 2 March, where “for the whole of last week” a young man had been making a medallion of him.

1. Woolner, admiring TC and eager to do a medallion of him, asked Coventry Patmore, of the British Museum Lib., to approach TC on his behalf. Patmore wrote Woolner, 11 Jan.: “I went to Mr. Carlyle's on Wednesday about the medallion: and I am glad to say succeeded in my mission. He seemed a little doubtful as to whether it would take too much of his time, but I told him I thought you could do it in about four sittings of a couple of hours” (Amy Woolner, Thomas Woolner, R.A. [1917] 11–12). Woolner had made a medallion of Tennyson when they were all at Coniston in 1850, and JWC was to ask for a cast of it.
