JWC TO PENELOPE SKETCHLEY

[July 1852]

Dear Penelope

I went to the Library today to seek your book1 and it is there—but five great volumes of it which having no carriage I dreaded to bring away with me— I thought, as you said it was to look up some particular thing you could perhaps tell me which volume you wanted—or could perhaps go to the Library yourself and use my name—to get a sight of all the volumes—If nothing will satisfy but to have the whole five at your house you shall have them. But if looking at them will do you have only to ask for Mr Jones, and tell him—or indeed [any] of the men you see that Mrs Carlyle wished you to be shown Mossheims &c and to bring away any of it you like

Yours truly /

J W C
