TC TO LADY ASHBURTON

Chelsea, Saturday [late February–early March 1853]

Thanks always.— I am frozen to death (having let my fire die), and out of measure hurried: but I will call at Bath House abt the Book, and let you know on monday.—

Think of the Insurrection at Milan; and pity poor mad Mazzini and Co, in spite of the big ugly bullying Times and its white-swollen Reeves!1— adieu

TC-Lady A [LA], [late Feb.–early March]. MS: NLS Acc. 11388. Hitherto unpbd. Dated after the uprising in Milan, 6 Feb., and while the Times was still critical. [To maintain the order established by the editors of the CL, this letter has been assigned a document date of 28 Feb. 1853.]

1. Henry Reeve. The Times was critical of the uprising during Feb. and March, calling it “a foolish and wicked attempt,” 8 March, but also later criticized the Austrian response.
