Chelsea, 16 May 1853

My dear Sir,

Chapman has been here, communicating at large about that matter; insists that he had himself originally intended, for his Railway series, to &c &c;—and in fine makes me a specific offer, different in form, but fully equal in result to yours. It is indisputable, at any rate, that he has the power to say Yes or say No, in regard to any such project just now!

So that you and I cannot treat farther on the subject; and I can only thank you for poking it up into its present profitable form,—which I do very heartily, and shall always remember as a good turn on your part.

Believe me / Yours very sincerely

T. Carlyle
