About a dozen years ago, I had some occasional intercourse with the late Mr Hume;1 who used to call upon me (not to much purpose) for advice or encouragement about his Poems &c. He was then a young man of cheerful, innocent and amiable ways; not without vivacity of intellect, and a perceptible talent for Scotch verses. For the rest, I always understood him to be assiduous in his professional business, and a man of perfect respectability in all his social relations. Of Mrs Hume2 I only heard; heard, however, nothing but good.
