TC TO MRS. WILLIAM JOHNSTONE
Scotsbrig 31st December 1853
Dear Mrs. Johnstone,
The accompanying Book was once a gift of mine to my Mother, that is now gone, and I cannot bear to take it back with me in present circumstances. Perhaps it may be of some slight use to you, at some time, or other: and I will ask you to accept it of me in memory of the lasting regard, and gratitude I bear to you in which the Departed was taught to share. Please do not trouble yourself in making any answer. I am just departing for Chelsea and know not when I shall see Annandale again.
With blessings and good wishes in whatever part of God's Universe our respective places may be.
I remain always your affece friend
T. Carlyle
