Chelsea, 4 jany, 1854

Dear Sir,

I am very glad to hear of Mrs Glen and you again; that things go well with you both, will always be good news to me.

My dear and excellent old Mother died from among us on Christmas day, in beautiful possession of herself, with intellect and affections still clear, at the age of 84: I am just returned from Scotland, and from witnessing the most unforgetable scenes. One of the pleasant thoughts in her last months, I have no doubt, was this of Mrs Glen having at last succeeded in her modest claim; which fact, you may well believe, is to me also a valuable one.

I will wish my estimable Mrs Glen and you all good in this world and in others, once more; and remain always

Yours sincerely /

T. Carlyle
