TC TO LADY ASHBURTON
Yes, I will, O Principessa nobilissima, carissima [O noblest, dearest Princess],—and love you all my days, to boot!—
I was almost about walking out to you yesterday; my imagination represented it as easy to “do the impossible”: but alas my shoes were bad, my &c &c; in fine, I knew the impossible when it shewed face;—smoked a cigar among the furze, on this side of Streatham,1 and returned home, weary of limbs and of heart.
Tomorrow I shall see you again, thank God!
