1. Francis Janvier wrote to TC, 27 Feb., from Philadelphia, sending his article from Graham's Magazine (46 [1855]: 173–80) on international copyright because of TC's interest in the subject; see TC to CHDI, 26 March 1842. He meant to write to other eminent authors in Europe, “whose works, like yours, have been extensively republished in this country, with no further return … than mere fame. For the purpose of securing co-operative influence, and as your counsel in the matter would be of very great value to us, permit me to solicit from you … a letter … in support of what we are now doing.” Francis de Haes Janvier (1817–85), poet and miscellaneous writer. 2. Friedrich Ludwig Georg von Raumer, Frederick II. and his Times (1837), trans. anon. by Sarah Austin, vol. 2 of Raumer, Beiträge zur neueren geschichte aus dem britischen Museum und Reichsarchive [Contributions to Modern History from the British Museum and the State Paper Office], 5 vols. (Leipzig, 1836–39). In Frederick TC describes it as “a very indistinct poor Book, in comparison with what it might have been” (Works 15:9). TC presumably knew through his friendship with her that Austin (1793–1867; ODNB; see 25:biographical note) was the trans. She also trans. Raumer's England (1836).
