TC TO THOMAS BALLANTYNE
Chelsea, 7 june, 1855—
Dear Ballantyne
Something I find in a Newspaper reminds me that in the L. D. Pamphlets (probably in Downing Street, where you may be extracting)1 there is one very ugly error of the press: “Augis” (Stable of Augis, Augean Stable) instead of “Augias,” which is the right name of the old Proprietor of said Stables. Pray put in “Augias” (throughout, for it occurs several times):2 the effect of Augis, to any scholar, is extremely ugly.3
Yours always truly /
T. Carlyle
