1. W. B. Donne wrote from the London Lib., 18 Oct.: “Is not ‘Duchess d'Orleans Briefe des an die Raugräfin Louise, 1676–1722 heraus. von Wolfg. Menzel 8vo Stuttgart 1843—’ one of the books which you mentioned on Saturday last? if so, we have it already in the Stuttgart. Biblioth. An answer oral or scriptural will oblige, as I await it before sending my order to W & N.—” TC noted on the letter: “Recd, Saturday morning / T.C.”

2. Lord Stanhope wrote, 19 Oct., about TC's letter on National Portrait Galleries (see TC to DL, 20 May): “You write it is very strange & even censurable that at Berlin ‘a genuine portrait of Frederick … was a thing I could no where hear of.’— But surely is not the reason this that Frederick all through life refused to sit for his portrait, so that no genuine delineation of him now exists?” He added: “We are going to Paris to see the Palais d'Industrie [see TC to LA, 13 April] before it closes. Shall you leave that pleasant duty unperformed?”
