TC TO CHARLES HOWARD
Chelsea, 24 Octr, 1855—
Dear Sir,
Perhaps the inclosed, small but indisputable vestige of a vanished Century will be in its right place, if I send it to you, the living Synonym, and representative by descent, of the Captain of Oliver Cromwell's Lifeguard;1 who has here received his Four Hundred and forty-one Pounds, “I say received,” for behoof of that distinguished company.
Mr Jackson, except by this communication, is not in the least known to me; but seems to be an abundantly civil man.2
With many respects and regards, I remain
Sincerely Yours /
T. Carlyle
Hon. Charles Howard &c &c
[TC's note]:
Sent me from Leicester, 10 days ago; “the lines marked here with inverted commas in red ink are wholly in Cromwell's hand.”— I objected to the signature “R.” Howard: the Proprietor (Wm Henry Jackson, Southfields Leicester) sends me a facsimile tracing of the Original Signature (herewith inclosed), and it is “Ch.” (Charles) accordingly.
