TC TO JOSEPH NEUBERG
Here is a little problem for you when you are next at the Museum: I am just upon the thing; yet an immediate solution is not necessary, were it even possible.
Kugler says not a syllable of this Kranach Picture,1 nor indeed (definitely) of almost any other whatever,—speaks merely afar off two words on the Wittenberg and Weimar Church Pictures; and then issues forth into “gemüthlichkeit, naivetät,” [comfortableness, simplicity] and the contract with Dürer:2—an extremely watery academic gentn, I am afraid, this Kugler, like some others!
Yours in bitter haste! /
