TC TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES

Sir,—In reference to the subscription for the aged goddaughter of Samuel Johnson, which was announced and the case stated in The Times of Thursday last, permit me to acknowledge the receipt of 5l., which came by post next day from some friendly correspondent, who signs no name and gives no date of place, and whom I cannot, therefore, otherwise thank and identify than in this manner.1 His note reached me on Friday; his money has been paid in to the general fund at Messrs. Coutts's.

Forster wrote, 5 Nov.: “I have posted the Letter to the Times—with only the alteration of a word or two to say that you have ‘no other’ mode of thanking and identifying ‘than’ so and so— Otherwise it might have been fancied that this single letter was the one received.” Despite this the Athenaeum, opposed to the appeal, chose to interpret TC's letter negatively: “The public seems to be of our opinion as regards the literary claims of the Misses Lowe, so pompously paraded a week ago. Mr. Carlyle acknowledges the receipt of a solitary five-pound note from a subscriber who gives no name:—from which the public, rightly or wrongly, infer that the appeal has failed” (10 Nov.); see also TC to CDHI, 7 Nov.
