TC TO LADY STANLEY
Chelsea, 7 feby, 1856—
Dear Lady Stanley,
I need not say, “I would with much pleasure”; for that you already know, this long while past! But the sad fact is, I am so low and sickly I cannot go out to dine at all, in these weeks,—but have to sit mournful at home; up to the chin in old “Brandenburg rubbish,” unhappy that I am! I hope to get sight of you soon, some morning; and that you will drop a tear over me from those fine eyes.
Yours ever truly /
T. Carlyle
