TC TO JOHN FORSTER
[14 May 1856]
Dear F.— I began (in my despair) to feel as if this wd never end at all! What on Earth can be the meaning of it? I understood since last thursday, the unfortunate old creatures had got their money, or some Document giving them right to call for it at the given times; and that we (thrice-unfortunate) had heard the last of them.1— Or is it they that have gone mad?
I am very ill, all this week past; and you are very busy, and not too well:—surely the thing will not torment us both to death, after we are so far thro' it?— No answer to me. I write a word to the old woman, advising her to inquire of Coutts's Broker.2— God help us all.— Yours ever,— T.C.
