Addressee is Charles Henry Cooper (1808-66; ODNB; see TC to CHC, 1 Jan. 1846), Cambridge solicitor and antiquary, identified by Cooper's residence in Cambridge and his close friendship with John Eyton Bickersteth Mayor (1825–1910; ODNB) classical scholar, fellow and assistant tutor, St. John's Coll., Cambridge.

1. Cooper had sent him J. E. B. Mayor's editions of Nicholas Ferrar: Two Lives by his brother John and by Doctor Jebb Cambridge, (1855) and Autobiography of Matthew Robinson Cambridge, (1856), which made up parts 1 and 2 of the series Cambridge in the Seventeenth Century. Mayor dedicated Matthew Robinson to Cooper. Matthew Robinson (1628–94), fellow of St. John's Coll., Cambridge (1650–54), and vicar of Burneston, Yorkshire, 1651–82.

2. Nicholas Ferrar (1592–1637), theologian; fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and founder of the Little Gidding Anglican community in Huntingdonshire. Mayor attacked TC in Nicholas Ferrar for confusing Nicholas with his brother (xxxviii–ix), misusing a quotation from Thomas Hearne, Thomae Caii Vindiciae Antiquitatis Academiae Oxoniensis (1730) in Cromwell (Works 6:73–74) (xxxviii), and failing to notice, although obvious from Hearne's book, that the “Anonymous Person” insulting Ferrar in a Puritan pamphlet (1641) was Edward Lenton of Notley (xviii–ix). Mayor wrote of TC: “[W]hen a man, who, though ever dinning in our ears that all around him is a moral and spiritual desert … presumes to scoff at one whose whole life was self-denial … it is vain to palliate his guilt by the plea, the pitiful plea, of carelessness” (xliii–iv). He adds in a note: “A long and intimate acquaintance with Mr. Carlyle's writings has, I hope, unfitted me alike for the creeping idolatry, and the fierce invective, of which he has been alternately the victim” (xliv).
