Chelsea, 12 Novr, 1856—

Dear Sir,

Will you permit me the liberty of recommending to you Mr A. Gilchrist, the Bearer of this; a young Literary man of my friends (author of the Life of Etty &c);1 who has a small favour to request of you; and whom I can certify to be worthy of your help in such a matter. A man of real merit; of rare diligence and fidelity in all the researches he undertakes.

He is at present engaged in something about Hollar (the old Bohemian-English Engraver):2 he understands you have lately, in your Department of the Brit. Museum, made some acquisition of Mss by or concerning Hollar;3 and he would fain know, so far as may be possible, what these contain, or at any rate what the truth of the rumour is. I believe you will help him, if it lie in your power.

With many regards, and thanks for past civilities, I remain

Yours sincerely /

T. Carlyle
