TC TO JOSEPH NEUBERG
Chelsea, 2d feby, 1857—
We are in utter despair here: “Book I”1 is lost (undiscoverable unless you happen to have it):—in the name of all the Saints, help us to find it again! Lost utterly it cannot at all be, without miracle; but it was laid by in a certain drawer here,—then given out to you, and I think brot back by you:—and neither high nor low is there now sight to be got of it. An awful tempest in a teapot!2 If you know or can advise in any measure, do it by Note immediately.
For the rest, I want you to come on Wedy Evening (Wednesday, day after tommorrow) at 5½ p.m., and eat a mutton chop with Lewes3 and me,—Lewes having volunteered. It is to be hoped the Ms. of Book I will have turned up in the interim!4
Yours always truly /
