JWC TO RICHARD MONCKTON MILNES
5 Cheyne Row Chelsea, Wednesday [6 May 1857]
My dear Mr Milnes
I cannot begin anything else this morning till I have said god bless you for your kindness. I shall not forget your waiting there, that weary long time, to spare me the pain of telling him.1 It was indeed a cruel moment you so spared me. I am ashamed you should have seen me so wanting in composure and courage. But six months confinement to the house, and much bodily ailment worst of all want of sleep may perhaps be some excuse for having grown weak and nervous.
You have heard that Lord Ashburton arrived two hours too late? and that She died of a fainting fit? So Rousse2 has written to Mr C this morning.
Yours affectionately /
Jane W Carlyle
