TC TO “D. C. @.” [Mr. C?]
“D. C. @” offers me in an ingenuous modest manner the Gift of a Book which is of mark in Literature, and Copies of which, as he is aware, are now probably rather dear in the Old-Book shops. For the offer I am grateful; and I will pleasantly remember it to “D. C. @.” 's account. But as for the Book, I have seen the Leviathan,1 and it is at any time accessible to me if I want to consult it again: so that I should grudge to take from my unknown friend a thing of money value, the value in other respects being already mine.
With many thanks
T. Carlyle
